Protein skimmers are THE intregal part of filtering a reef tank.  Keeping the nutrients to a minimum is very important for keeping water quality pristine.  Skimmers remove large molecules (lipids, fats, proteins, etc.) and other particulates like detritus from the water to keep the water conditions ideal.
